Starting Location:  Salt Lick Trailhead near of underground office park near Old Valmeyer, IL    We are NOT starting in upper Valmeyer.

 

Meeting Time:  9:15 am  Please don’t be late!

 Time of Departure:  9:30 am

Description: We will hike the Newman, Salt Lick and Johnson Trails.  First  up a bluff with two optional climbs to overlooks and then down the bluff  to the lowest section.   Next we proceed  uphill towards Valmeyer crossing the creek  numerous times to Upper Valmeyer where we will lunch at  The Corner Pub which is across from the end of the trail.  Next we retrace the trail hiking downhill.  At the bottom we will proceed on a flat Johnson path to the end of our hike (We do not go up the down the bluff a second time.  The last  one to two miles are flat.  These are very scenic trails in the Old Valmeyer, IL area.   Boots and sticks are recommended.  We will be crossing the creek balancing on rocks.  This time the rocks will not be wet and slippery like they can be after rain but sticks will be an asset.

Directions: 

  • Take I-270/255 South East across JB Bridge
  • Exit 6, Columbia/Hwy 3 driving 2 miles passing Marketplace.
  • Right on Valmeyer Road for 1 mile.
  • Left onto Bluff Rd for about 13 miles
  • Go Left on Limestone Road at a large sign “Rock City. ”   There is also a small Salt Lick sign.
  • Take an immediate left into the parking lot.  If you pass Margraphics at the park or reach 156 you’ve gone too far.

Experience Level: MODERATE TO DIFFICULT

Stops:  As needed and then lunch stop in New Valmeyer halfway into hike.

Hazards:  Steep up and down hill, crossing the creek several times balancing on rocks.  They will probably be dry due to the drought.

Other: Hiking boots or shoes and hiking poles are advised.  Dogs welcome but must be on a leash.  Bringing your dog is only recommended if you do NOT join us for lunch.  In that case, you will want to bring a lunch or significant snacks to eat outdoors along the trail.
