All rides are free for St. Louis Recreational Cyclists members. Non-members must join by their second ride.
Starting Location: Schnucks Market Place Columbia, IL
Time of Departure: 9:00 AM
Description: Rolling ride on the back roads to visit Smithton, IL. Ride leader wants to do the 52.3 mile route. Should have a slight easterly breeze to blow us back to the start.
Ride Leader’s Expectations: Final Speed – 15 to 17 and 14 to 15+ mph average. if there is a 2nd Flight. Some speedsters may go faster. Many times there are stretches where speeds will increase. Drafting – There will be drafting on this ride. Distance – 47.4 or 52.3 miles. Climbing Elevation: 1850‘ to 2007’ of climbing depending on route. This ride has rolling hills. Riding time: Approx. 3.5+ hours, time on course 4 hours.
2nd Flight: If anyone would like to lead a 2nd Flight on this ride at a more moderate pace, please let the ride leader know so I can add to this posting.
Directions:
- From I-55 and I-255 in South St. Louis County go 6.0 miles southeast across the Jefferson Barracks Bridge on I-255.
- Exit IL Hwy 3 South, go 2.2 miles and turn right on Veterans Parkway @ McDonald’s.
- Go 0.1 mile and turn left on Columbia Center just past Regions Bank.
- Turn right into the Schnucks MarketPlace parking lot.

Please print a copy if you want one. Ride Leaders have minimal copies. All participants are expected to bring either the cue sheet, a cycling computer with the ride’s Navigation files and/or Smartphone with GPS link.

Download both routes into your devices in case we decide to do the shorter route for some reason.
Rest Stops: Several to re-group as needed. Main Rest/Food stop in Smithton at the Casey’s convenience store on Main St (Hwy 159) and Brevo St.
Road Hazards: Chipseal pops up here and there. I tried to divert us away from all known recently chipped roads but there might be some surprises.
Weather Considerations: The ride will be canceled if: It’s raining or there is a high percentage prediction of rain, high winds, or too hot or cold. Please watch the weather forecasts and radar. Check the website for any corrections or cancellations before you leave home.
