Waterloo to New Athens V2 with 2nd Flight

All rides are free for St. Louis Recreational Cyclists members. Non-members must sign a waiver and must join by their second ride.
All participants must wear a helmet. Ride leaders have the right to exclude riders who in their judgement are not in compliance or not suited to participate.
Starting Location: Waterloo, IL Walmart parking lot.
Assembly Time: 7:40 AM
Time of Departure: 8:00 AM
Description: Riding to New Athens, Illinois and back. Options for 47 to 51.2 miles.
Ride Leader’s Expectations: Final Speed – 1st Flight 15 mph Average – 2nd Flight 13-14 mph Average. We will cruise at times at 16-18 mph when there are stretches where speeds can increase. Drafting – We like to work together and will be drafting at times on this ride. Distance: 47-51.2 miles, the ride leader will do the 51.2 option. Climbing Elevation: Approx. 1350′ of climbing. This ride has rolling hills and some long grades. Riding time: Approx. 4+ hours, time on course 4.5 hours
2nd Flight: Leslie McCormick is leading a 2nd Flight at a moderate pace on this ride.
Directions:
- I-270/255 SE across the JB Bridge.
- Go right at Exit #6 towards Columbia/Hwy 3 south.
- Go for 9.1 miles to HH Road.
- Turn right on HH towards Walmart.
- Turn left at first street and then right into Walmart parking lot.

Please print your copy. Ride Leaders have minimal extras. All participants are expected to bring either the cue sheet, a cycling computer with the ride’s Navigation files and/or Smartphone with GPS link. If unable to, speak to the Leader before the start.

Stops: Re-grouping stops as needed. #1 Rest Stop New Athens Casey’s and #2 Rest Stop Smithton Casey’s (51.2 ride only).
Road Hazards: Unknown at this time. Make sure you bring electrolyte drinks and snacks. Drink along the route. Don’t wait until you feel light headed or feel chills; if you do – call out! We’ll take breaks along the way in shady spots.
Weather concerns: Temperatures are forecast for the 50’s and 60’s with sunshine but we won’t start in the rain, if excessively windy, or if a large weather front is moving in. Please watch the weather forecasts and radar. Check the website for any corrections or cancellations before you leave home. Contact ride leader with questions.
