St Charles – Calhoun – Portage 101

RIDE Starting Location: Tourism Center in St. Charles
Assemble: 6:40 am
Time of Departure: 7:00 am
Description: A century ride to Calhoun County, Illinois, New Town and Portage des Sioux. Rolling hills, two long steep climbs and a flat 40 miles to finish. Final average speed 14-15 mph; higher speeds on the flats.
Special Considerations: Bring $10 in cash (no credit cards) for the Golden Eagle Ferry. Bring your sunscreen, water (lots), bicycle lights, and snacks. The ride may have headwinds over 10 mh.
Directions to Start Point:
From I-70
- Take 5th St Exit to St. Charles for ~0.4 miles
- Right on Boon’s Lick Road
- Left on S. Riverside Drive for 3/4 mile.
- Park behind Kilwin’s across from the Tourism Center.

Rest Stop: Meal stops at 49 miles and 62. Short convenience stops 12, 55, 72, 78 and 86 miles.
Notes: At this initial posting time, the expected temperatures will be in the high eighties. Check the weather forecast and updates to this posting for heat, rain and wind advisories. The ride will be canceled if adverse weather conditions are likely.
