Salt Lick Wildflower Walk non-club activity

Starting Location: Salt Lick Trailhead near of underground office park near Old Valmeyer, IL
Time of Arrival: 9:15 am don’t be late!
Time of Departure: 9:30 am
Description: We will walk a rocky, natural trail with a long gradual hill and many stream crossings where you balance from rock to rock. One to two miles are flat (this is the wildflower area (worth the drive just to see this flat area. It’s in and out so you can turn back at any time. These are very scenic trails in the Old Valmeyer, IL area. 5 Miles if all trails are walked. Boots and sticks are recommended. The wildflowers should be in peak bloom this week! At the top of the trail, we will walk a short distance into town to a good sandwich shop/gas station. If you don’t want to stop for lunch or want to turn back early, I suggest you bring water and a sizable snack.
Directions:
- Take I-270/255 South East across JB Bridge
- Exit 6, Columbia/Hwy 3
- In .8 mile go right onto Palmer Road
- Palmer turns into the Bluff Road for about 13 miles.
- Go Left on Limestone Road at a large sign “Rock City. ” There is also a small Salt Lick sign.
- Take an immediate left into the parking lot. If you pass Margraphics at the park or reach 156 you’ve gone too far.
Experience Level: MODERATE TO DIFFICULT
Restrooms: Porta potty at start of hike. (If you’d prefer, stop at the gas station when you get onto Palmer Road in Columbia.) Restrooms in upper Valmeyer where we stop for lunch.
Stops: Lunch in New Valmeyer halfway into hike.
Hazards: Rocks may be slippery when crossing the stream.
Other: Boots or shoes and poles are advised. There could be some mud.
