Starting Location:  Salt Lick Trailhead near of underground office park near Old Valmeyer, IL

NOTE:  If we must cancel due to rain, we will reschedule for the next day (Friday).

Time of Arrival: 9:15 am  don’t be late!

Time of Departure: 9:30 am

Description: We will hike a rocky, natural trail with a long gradual hill and many stream crossings  where you balance from rock to rock.  One to two miles are flat  (this is the wildflower area (worth the drive just to see this flat area.  It’s in and out so you can turn back at any time.  These are very scenic trails in the Old Valmeyer, IL area.  5 Miles if all trails are hiked. Boots and sticks are recommended. The wildflowers should be in  peak bloom this week!    Bring a sizable snack to eat at the top of the trail or walk a short distance into town to  a good sandwich shop/gas station.

Directions: with

  • Take I-270/255 South East across JB Bridge
  • Exit 6, Columbia/Hwy 3 driving 2 miles passing Marketplace.
  • Right on Valmeyer Road for 1 mile.
  • Left onto Bluff Rd for about 13 miles
  • Go Left on Limestone Road at a large sign “Rock City. ”   There is also a small Salt Lick sign.
  • Take an immediate left into the parking lot.  If you pass Margraphics at the park or reach 156 you’ve gone too far.

Experience Level: MODERATE TO DIFFICULT

Stops:  Snack break or lunch near New Valmeyer halfway into hike.

Hazards:  Rocks may be slippery when crossing the stream.

Other: Hiking boots or shoes and hiking poles are advised.
