Bike for Heroes Ride

Please consider joining Joan Fromme, and Faye Holdenried on a non-club charity ride to support our veterans.  The Joshua Chamberlain Society is having their 8th Annual Bike for Heroes Charity Ride on Saturday, August 19, 2023 starting in Columbia, Ill.  We will be doing the 50 mile flat ride averaging 10-12 mph but there are many other choices of mileages and speeds.

Money provides long-term support to veterans from local areas that have sustained permanent combat injuries fighting the long war on terror for our nation.  It also provides long-term support to the children of veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice in our serve.

Starting Location:  Sunset Overlook Restaurant, 11604 Bluff Road Columbia Illinois.

Arrival Time:  8:00 am  (If you wish to ride on your own, you can select your own time to begin.  The event starts at 6:00 am.  There are routes that vary from 10 to 100 miles.)

Start Time: 8:15 am

Description:  Tour the flat farmlands of the Mississippi Valley heading south out of Columbia, Illinois, with views of the bluffs as we support our adopted heroes. Get involved, give, and meet our heroes!

Difficulty Level:  4Ab

The JCS Bike for Heroes ride offers five different routes in distances with a group start time at 7:30 A.M.

  • Purple Heart Route: approximately 10 miles
  • Red Route: approximately 25 miles
  • White Route: approximately 50 miles
  • Blue Route: approximately 80 miles
  • Blue Route with Bronze Star Century: approximately 100 miles

Other:  Restrooms at start of ride and porta pottys throughout the route.  Snacks and beverages provided at rest stops.

Weather Considerations:  Canceled if raining at start time.  Check the website for cancellations before departure. Start time may be altered in hot weather.

If you would like to ride with us, contact Joan Fromme (314-560-7536) so we will make sure we start with  you.  If  you decide to ride a different route or start at a different time, please contact us so that we can keep a count and names of those that participated for our newsletter.  We can also advise you of changes in case we start earlier or later due to weather conditions.

Directions: Take I-270 S toward Chicago.  Continue onto I-255 E crossing the JB Bridge.   Take Exit 6 on onto Il-3 S.  Take the first exit onto Palmer Road.  Right onto Bluff Road for one mile.  Sunset Overlook is on your left.
