Columbia to Waterloo – (Polar Bear ride)

All rides are free for St. Louis Recreational Cyclists members. Non-members must join by their second ride.
Starting Location: Schnucks Market Place Columbia, IL
Time of Departure: 10:00AM
Description: Riding through the back roads to visit Waterloo, IL. Options for 34 to 40 miles. Group vote at the rest stop in Waterloo as to return length.
Ride Leader’s Expectations: Final Speed – 14 to 15 mph Average. 12 to 13 mph if we have a 2nd Flight. Sometimes we cruise between 16-20 mph if conditions permit. Drafting – There will be drafting on this ride. Distance – 34 to 40 miles. Group vote at rest stop for return distance. Climbing Elevation: 1461′ of climbing on all routes. This ride has mild hills. No big climbs! Riding time: Approx. 3.5+ hours, time on course 4 hours. Dress warm. Temps in the mid 30s.
2nd Flight Opportunities: Anyone is welcome to lead a 2nd Flight at a more moderate pace on this ride. Please contact the posting Ride Leader to coordinate.
Directions:
- From I-55 and I-255 in South St. Louis County go 6.0 miles southeast across the Jefferson Barracks Bridge on I-255.
- Exit IL Hwy 3 South, go 2.2 miles and turn right on Veterans Parkway @ McDonald’s.
- Go 0.1 mile and turn left on Columbia Center just past Regions Bank.
- Turn right into the Schnucks MarketPlace parking lot.
Cue Sheet: Columbia – Stemler – Millstadt – Bohleysville – Waterloo (Winter Routes)
All participants are expected to bring either the cue sheet, a cycling computer with the ride’s Navigation files and/or Smartphone with GPS link. If unable to, speak to the Leader before the start.
Print a cue sheet if you want one. Ride Leaders will have just a few extra.

Experience Level: 4Bb – 4Bc
Stops: #1 Optn. Rest Stop in Millstadt if needed. Main Rest Stop in Waterloo at Mobil On-the-Run on Country Club & Hwy 3.
Road Hazards: Might be a little windy and we’re always looking out for “black ice”.
Weather Considerations: Dress warm. Wear your winter gear. Probably be starting in the mid 30s and staying there. The ride will be canceled if: It’s raining/snowing or there is a high percentage prediction of rain, snow, high winds or too cold. Please watch the weather forecasts and radar. Check the website for any corrections or cancellations before you leave home.
